Breast Implant Scar Photos: Periareolar

The periareolar incision is by far the most popular incision location for breast augmentations at Sunset.

Where is a Periareolar Incision Done?
The periareolar incision is usually located only along the bottom section of the areola, which is the darker area surrounding the nipple (not the nipple itself). Photos below illustrate this.

What are the Advantages & Disadvantages of the The Periareolar Incision?

The biggest advantage to this incision location is that the scar tends to heal well.

The periareolar incision gives Dr. Svehlak and Dr. Yamini a high degree of control when placing each patient's breast implants. Placement is a key part in making the implant look natural.

The periareolar incision works well for either silicone gel or saline breast implants.

There is no greater risk of loss of sensation using a periareolar incision location vs. other incision locations.

The disadvantages include a higher risk of exposure to the bacteria naturally found in the breast tissue, and a more visible scar if the incision doesn't heal well. These are two key reasons why it is important to seek a highly-trained, well-experienced, board certified plastic surgeon, like Dr. Yamini or Dr. Svehlak. These surgeons both devote a significant portion of their practice to breast implants, breast lifts, breast reductions and breast revisions, and therefore perform this incision regularly. We find that most patients are very pleased with how their their periareolar scars heal after their surgery.
