ABOUT Sculptra (Los Angeles Area)

top of page

Commonly used throughout Europe, Sculptra is also known as the "liquid facelift." Sculptra is a filler product intended to correct the signs of facial fat loss, or lipoatrophy. Sculptra can be used by a plastic surgeon to improve the appearance of the cheeks, eyes, and temples that tend to change as people age. Popular areas of use include aging skin folds, sunken eyes, hollowed cheeks and indented chin surfaces.

Sculptra is composed of a synthetic injectible material called Poly-L-lactic acid. It is the same material found in dissolvable stitches since it is biocompatible and biodegradeable. A natural form of poly-L-lactic acid is produced in the muscles during exercise. The synthetic form has been in use for over 25 years in a variety of countries.

During the Sculptra procedure, a patient is numbed with topical numbing cream and given a series of injections in the desired area. This acid stimulates the skin to produce more collagen, thus producing a plumping effect.

Sculptra does not give results immediately. There is a time factor involved since the true volume effect is created by your own collagen, not the product itself. This collagen replenishment takes place over a period of several months. Sculptra works gradually to give you a more youthful-looking appearance without looking like you’ve had work done.

The number of sessions needed to improve facial appearance varies with each patient, and Los Angeles Scultpra patients usually average 3 sessions over several months to accomplish optimum re-volumization. Each session typically involves 1-2 vials of Sculptra.

Sculptra is not intended to replace a facelift, but its capacity to lift tissue has proven successful. Patients are able to safely and non-surgically receive some of the benefits of traditional facelifts through the product’s effect of plumping up the skin. Strategic placement can not only restore and create balanced contours, the effect of filling a compartment above one area means the compartment adjacent to and/or below the treated one gets its own lift. The goal is to look better, not different!

How is Sculptra Different from Other Injectable Treatments?

Sculptra is different in the way it works:

  • SculptraAesthetic works gradually to replace lost collagen - a key cause of aging.

  • It can give you subtle-yet-noticeable results and can last up to 2 years. Of course, individual results may vary.

  • An average number of treatment sessions of SculptraAesthetic is 3 spaced over several months.

Treatment considerations: SculptraAesthetic is not for use in the lips. SculptraAesthetic is not recommended for use in the periorbital area. SculptraAesthetic has not been evaluated in areas other than nasolabial wrinkles and folds in clinical trials. Other safety information is below on this page. You may also download the Patient Guide.

How Long Does Sculptra Last?

top of page

Unlike other fillers, such as Restylane and Cosmoplast, which last only a few months, Sculptra helps the body stimulate its own collagen. This results in a much longer-lasting effect, generally two to three years.

Sculptra Side Effects

top of page

While we have not seen many side effects to date in our patients, potential side effects of Sculptra are minimal and include short-term bruising, swelling, redness or injection site discomfort. For a full list of potential side-effects as well as other information, please download the Patient Guide.

After Sculptra Los Angeles - Instructions

top of page

You may experience minor bleeding, redness, swelling, pain, and bruising following your injections. This is common, and usually goes away within a few days.

To get the most from SculptraAesthetic, please follow these steps at home after your injections:

  • Within the first 24 hours after treatment, apply a cloth-wrapped ice pack to the treated area for a few minutes at a time to help reduce swelling.

  • Massage the treated area 5 times a day for 5 days.

  • Avoid excess sun and UV lamp exposure until any initial swelling and redness has resolved.

  • Makeup may be applied a few hours posttreatment if no complications are present.

IMPORTANT SAFETY INFORMATION You should not use Sculptra Aesthetic if you are allergic to any ingredient of the product or have a history of keloid formation or hypertrophic scarring. Sculptra Aesthetic should not be injected while you have an active skin infection or inflammation in the treatment area and should not be injected into the red area of the lip. Use in the skin near the eyes is not recommended. Side effects of Sculptra Aesthetic may include injection site discomfort, redness, bruising, bleeding, itching, and swelling. Other side effects may include small lumps under the skin that are sometimes noticeable when pressing on the treated area. Larger lumps, some with delayed onset with or without inflammation or skin discoloration, have also been reported. In a key clinical study the numbers of small and larger lumps were low and most resolved without treatment.

INDICATION Sculptra Aesthetic is intended for use in people with healthy immune systems as one-time treatment regimen of up to 4 injection sessions that are scheduled about 3 weeks apart for correction of shallow to deep nasolabial fold contour deficiencies and other facial wrinkles in which deep dermal grid pattern (cross-hatch) injection technique is appropriate. Sculptra Aesthetic may provide cosmetic correction of facial wrinkles with a Wrinkle Assessment Score of 2, 3, or 4 as shown in the photos in Figure 2 of the accompanying full Prescribing Information.
