Experience at Sunset Cosmetic Surgery in Los Angeles, CA, has taught us that there are many, many motivations as to why our patients seek plastic surgery. Some seek help to fix a particular condition, such as rhinoplasty for breathing problems, while others visit for improvement upon their appearance, as in some cases of breast augmentation. However, whatever the reason, we understand that it makes you unhappy, can be very bothersome and is most certainly not helping you to feel like the best version of yourself.

You are not alone. Plastic surgery is growing in popularity and there are a number of reasons patients choose to receive it. While we can’t claim that an increased level of self esteem is number one, we do know that it most certainly is tied to it. And in fact, research has proven it!

Research Links Plastic Surgery to Increased Self-Esteem

According to an article published in the journal of Clinical Psychological Science, nearly 550 patients were surveyed for the psychological after-effects of plastic surgery. Interestingly, results were compared with approximately 265 patients that sought plastic surgery, but in the end, did not undergo it. Both groups were contacted at 3, 6 and 12-month intervals after either having the surgery or only making contact with the clinic (as was the case of the respondents in the comparison group). Overall, the results revealed positive outcomes and the patients that chose to follow through on their aesthetic surgery goals demonstrated more enjoyment of life and increased satisfaction and/or self-esteem. They also made statements claiming they felt healthier, were less anxious and found the operated body feature in particular (but also their body as a whole), more attractive.

Don’t Expect the Impossible

Though no adverse effects were observed by research authors in the journal article, a minor few of the respondents did expect their plastic surgery to fulfill the impossible. When patient expectations are that plastic surgery will solve all of their problems or transform them into a new person, negative mental outcomes will typically follow. Unreasonable expectations of what a surgery might achieve can often negate the positives of a very successful plastic surgery procedure.

Award-Winning Plastic Surgeons Welcome the Opportunity

At Sunset, we value each patient and aim to assist in your pursuit towards happiness. Our number one priority is always patient safety, comfort and satisfaction. We try to take the time to get to know each of you, understand what it is that you are seeking and in turn, thoroughly explain—in great detail—each procedure so you have realistic expectations. Throughout the years, we have received many letters from patients, for both Dr. Daniel Yamini and Dr. Steven Svehlak, thanking them for making patients feel exceptionally comfortable, providing unconditional care, sharing their expertise and talent, but most importantly… helping to build self esteem.

Last year, our skilled plastic surgeons empowered many patients performing the most popular surgical procedures, including: breast augmentation, liposuction, abdominoplasty, rhinoplasty, lip lifts and eyelid surgery. They were also highly sought after in Los Angeles for the growing trend in facial aesthetics with non-surgical injections that included: Botox, Juvederm and lip enhancement procedures. At Sunset Cosmetic Surgery, we welcome the opportunity to help you transform your self-confidence.
