What is Otoplasty?

At our practice, we specialize in both adult and pediatric ear surgery. The type of ear surgery is determined during a consultation with our board-certified plastic surgeons in Los Angeles. Case dependent, the procedure is done on an outpatient basis using local anesthesia, and patients can expect the following:

  • Your surgeon will make an incision behind your ear or on the inside of the ear folds
  • Your ear tissue will be manipulated and may include folding, and shaping of cartilage
  • Closing the incisions with stitches

Typically, general anesthesia is used for younger children. Surgery can take anywhere from 1 to 3 hours depending on the complexity.

This is a 44 y.o. female who had previously had a few ear pinning procedures (Otoplasty) by another surgeon with unsatisfactory results.  She wanted her upper ears to be placed more inward.  She said they look like “Mr. Spock”.  She was evaluated by Dr. Svehlak.

Dr. Svehlak performed bilateral secondary otoplasty, local anethesia, to specifically correct the prominent upper ears.  While on the procedure table, she was given a mirror to guide Dr. Svehlak in the positioning of the ears.  Stitches were placed and tied, while the patient viewed this in real time.  Dr. Svehlak tied the sutures at the exact position desired by the patient.  The patient was very happy with the results.

This is a 9 y.o. male, from Manhattan Beach, who is brought by his parents to see Dr. Svehlak.  They are wishing to correct his prominent ears.

Dr. Svehlak performed bilateral ear pinning (Otoplasty) under a general anesthesia.  Post-opersatively his ears appear normal and are in a normal position.

This is a 28 y.o. male from Camarillo who was concerned about his prominent protruding ears.  He was evaluated by Dr. Svehlak for correction.  He wanted more natural looking ears.

Dr. Svehlak performed bilateral Otoplasty with careful manipulation of the ear cartilage. Some cartilage was reshaped with internal stitches and some was removed.  The result shows a more naturally shaped and positioned ears.  The patient was happy with the results.

This is a 26 y.o. female from Sherman Oaks who wanted her ears in a more normal position.

Dr. Svehlak performed bilateral otoplasty (ear pinning) under a local anesthesia by careful cartilage manipulation and stitch placement.  She was very happy with her results.

This is a 29 y.o. female from Los Angeles who wanted her ears set back some.  She was evaluated by Dr. Svehlak.

Dr Svehlak performed bilateral otoplasty under a general anesthesia with manipulation of the ear cartilage and suturing to get a symmetrical ear pinning.  She was happy with the results.

This is a 21 y.o. female from Santa Monica who was evaluated by Dr. Svehlak to correct her prominent ears.

Dr. Svehlak performed bilateral otoplasty with removal of some ear cartilage and reshaping other ear cartilage using sutures.  The result was more natural shaped and positioned ears.  She was very happy with the results.

    Recovery

    The recovery time will generally depend on the extent of your procedure and this will be discussed in more detail during your consultation with our team. A post-surgery dressing will be applied to your ears and this must remain in place for several days, and a protective headband may be needed. After your surgery you may notice:

    • Soreness
    • Numbness
    • Bruising

    This is normal after otoplasty, and you should also expect the following lifestyle limitations during your recovery:

    • Do not wet your hair for a few days, until the bandages have been removed
    • No swimming for the first 4 to 6 weeks
    • No contact sports during the first few months

    Possible Complications and Risks

    Your surgeon will discuss ear pinning complications and risks with you prior to your procedure. It is common knowledge that no surgical procedure goes without the risk of complications or side effects. These include infection, excessive numbness, reoccurrence, and hematoma. Therefore it is important to follow your surgeon’s pre-, and post-surgery instructions with great care to ensure optimum recovery.
