Cosmetic Mole Removal: Dermatologist vs. Surgeon
Do you have a mole that you don’t like? Moles can be bothersome for some people, as they can be odd shapes and sizes, and are often in places that you’d rather not have a scar. After deciding you want cosmetic mole removal in Los Angeles, the next decision is whether to see a plastic surgeon or a dermatologist for your procedure.
Generally speaking, a dermatologist and a plastic surgeon are equally qualified and skilled at mole removal. Both will send the mole off to a laboratory for close examination under a microscope. The key difference is that plastic surgeons usually have more experience performing incisions that can help minimize scarring for cosmetic mole removal. A dermatologist’s goal is often to simply remove the mole.

As plastic surgeons, Dr. Daniel Yamini and Dr. Steven Svehlak’s goal is to also remove the mole, but, in addition, to:
- Place the incision(s) in a way that creates less pull and tension on the area, which helps reduce the formation of scar tissue
- Perform incisions and stitches using techniques from cosmetic plastic surgery to help reduce the appearance of the resulting scar
After your cosmetic mole removal is complete and the area has been stitched up, the office will send your mole to the lab for testing. The stitches may dissolve on their own, or if the stitches are not the dissolvable type, you will be asked to book an appointment to have them removed about a week or so after your cosmetic mole removal procedure.ESTD
