About Fat Grafting

Fat Grafting is a procedure wherein fat cells are extracted from the body (usually stomach area) and re-inserted into the face — nasolabial folds (mouth to nose folds), under eyes,  cheeks, chin, temples, etc. It is expected that some of the fat inserted will be re-absorbed into the body, while the rest remains permanent. This procedure can be done in an operating room with general anesthesia, or, in some cases may be done in-office using local anesthetic.

There is a tremendous amount of research that indicates that fat cells throughout the body contain a large number of stem cells. Stem cells have the potential to regenerate and rejuvenate many types of normal tissue, including skin. Many believe that stem cells are injected along with the fat cells when patients undergo fat grafting, which can help enhance the overall quality and youthfulness of facial skin in addition to the fullness and volume gained from the actual fat grafting.

This is a 33 y.o. female from Los Angeles who wanted to improve the tired look around her eyes.  She did not want any eyelid surgery, such as a blepharoplasty.  She discussed her concerns with Dr. Svehlak.

Dr. Svehlak performed micro fat grafting to tear troughs and upper cheeks to help contour and fill the hollow under her eyes.  This made her look refreshed and more youthful.  Most of these micro fat transfers can be done under a local anesthesia.  These photos show a series from short term post op to many years post op.  Fat Does Last!  She was very happy with her results.

This Los Angeles facial fat grafting patient came into the office for a lower eye blepharoplasty originally, but was able to achieve the less “tired” look she desired with just fat grafting under the eyes in the tear trough area, which required less money and a shorter recovery time.

    This procedure is not incredibly invasive but does create a moderate amount of swelling afterwards. Everyone reacts differently, with most of the swelling subsiding in a week or so, and “final results’ in 1-2 months.Most of our Los Angeles and Beverly Hills facial fat grafting patients feel comfortable returning to work in one week or so. Patients should really consider smoking cessation as it significantly decreases the amount of fat that will remain permanent.
