The FDA-approved injectable treatment works to reduce submental neck fat (aka a double chin). There’s no incision, no surgery, no downtime. Kybella® treatments simply involve a series of injections to reduce the number of fat cells in the targeted area.

What Does Kybella Do?

The FDA approved Kybella® in 2015 for the reduction of submental fullness, or chin fat, without the need for surgery. Its special formulation is a synthesized form of deoxycholic acid, a naturally occurring molecule in the body that aids in the breakdown and absorption of dietary fat. When injected into subcutaneous fat, Kybella® causes the destruction of fat cells. Once destroyed, those cells are unable to store or accumulate fat. Patients often respond positively after treatments, reporting a reduction in the amount of fat in the area under the chin, as well as enhanced emotional impact when asked how happy, bothered, self-conscious, embarrassed, old, and overweight they felt after their session.

This is a 32 year old male from Santa Ana, CA, who was concerned about a small amount of extra fullness under his chin. He worked out regularly and was lean and fit. He consulted with Dr. Steven Svehlak to discuss his concerns.

Dr. Svehlak performed to 2 separate Kybella injection treatments to the submental area using 6ml of enzyme at each session. Each treatment session was 2 months apart. He had a nice result with only 2 treatments.

    Typical Recovery Time

    Sunset’s Kybella® treatments are administered by double board-certified surgeons. The injectable is administered directly into the fat under the chin and is tailored to individual treatment goals. Down time following a treatment is minimal. Each session lasts approximately 30 minutes and can be performed right in our office, allowing patients to get back to work or resume their daily activities immediately.

    How Long Do the Results Last?

    Once the desired results are achieved after two, four, or six treatment sessions, retreatment is not expected.

    What Are the Side Effects and Risks?

    Unwanted side effects are rare, but may include swelling, bruising, pain, numbness, redness, and/or areas of hardness in the treatment area. Though these tend to resolve on their own, contact us immediately if you experience any of these side effects.

    Other Safety Information

    Kybella® (deoxycholic acid) is meant to improve the appearance of moderate to severe submental fat in the neck and chin area in adults. The injectable has not been established, and is not recommended, for the effective and safe treatment of subcutaneous fat outside the submental region. More safety and contraindication information can be found from manufacturer Allergan on the Kybella® website.
