Many women, and an increasing number of men, seek an abdominoplasty in their pursuit of slimmer body contours. In performing what is commonly known as a “tummy tuck,” Los Angeles plastic surgeons Dr. Steve Svehlak and Dr. Dan Yamini use the surgery to help patients who have undergone massive weight loss or experienced pregnancy to tighten loose skin and remove excess fat in the waistline.

When performed correctly, a tummy tuck can drastically improve the appearance of a patient’s midsection. The most natural-looking results are often created by well-experienced, board-certified plastic surgeons. It is vital to find a reputable and highly experienced surgeon to perform the procedure.

Our highly skilled surgeons are experienced in the latest and most sophisticated abdominoplasty techniques. They take great pride in helping Los Angeles tummy tuck patients achieve a body with a smaller midsection and a more youthful appearance. An abdominoplasty may involve one or more elements designed to flatten the belly. Typically, your surgeon will make an incision across the lower abdomen, using the opening to access tissues underlying the skin. A small amount of unwanted fat can be removed, and lax abdominal muscles can be tightened with sutures.

The procedure also involves carefully placing strong internal stitches at the level of the muscle to firm, tighten, and flatten the muscle layer, creating an internal corset using your own tissues.

After the necessary tissues are removed or repositioned, your surgeon will re-drape the skin over the new contours, removing any excess to ensure it sits flat and smooth. Often, a hole will be made to allow the navel to show in the proper place.

A mini-tummy tuck involves treating the loose tissue and muscle below the navel only, avoiding the incision around the navel. This surgery is less involved and is effective in correcting lower abdominal problems, usually with a shorter resulting scar.

Patients considering a tummy tuck can see before and after photos. Beverly Hills- and Hollywood-area men and women coming to Sunset Cosmetic Surgery should explain the look they are seeking during their consultation and get an idea of what an abdominoplasty can do by seeing images of real patients.

Previously, tummy tuck surgery could involve an uncomfortable recovery period, especially during the first few days. Our tummy tuck surgeons use either a ON-Q® pain relief system or the new long-lasting anesthetic Exparel® to make recovery for patients much more comfortable.

The ON-Q® relief is used for up to one week and runs by itself 24/7, needing no adjustments. The system provides a continuous infusion of a local anesthetic directly to the treatment area for postoperative pain management.

Exparel® is a non-narcotic local analgesic. Long-acting, it is a slow release injectable pain medicine that is commonly used for breast and tummy tuck surgeries. It can relieve pain for 72 hours with one injection.

Patients often comment on how easy their recovery process was using these pain control systems. With their pain under control, they are better able to focus on healing and getting back to their life. (We usually have to remind them to continue taking it easy, as they feel pretty good!)

After a tummy tuck, Los Angeles-area patients typically take one to two weeks off from work, depending on the nature of their case. We recommend that they avoid heavy lifting and exercise for at least three weeks following their surgery.

Procedures to Complement a Tummy Tuck

Patients who want more fat reduction than a tummy tuck involves frequently choose liposuction to slim down their abdominal area or other regions where fat collects on the body.

A tummy tuck is frequently included as part of a Mommy Makeover, which may also involve liposuction and breast surgery: augmentation, a breast lift, or a breast reduction as necessary, depending on the needs of the patient.

Dr. Steve Svehlak and Dr. Dan Yamini will work with you to finalize a plan that includes a procedure or combination of procedures chosen to deliver ideal results.
