Why Does the Doctor You Choose for Liposuction Matter?
Dr. Svehlak and Dr. Yamini are double-board-certified surgeons who use the most advanced technologies to achieve the smoothest and most natural-looking results possible with the least recovery time. Some of these technologies include VASERlipo® Liposelection and SMART Laser™ lipo for Los Angeles.
The doctors’ combined expertise and years of professional experience are why they’re among the leading surgeons for liposuction in the Los Angeles area. Unfortunately, regulations on who can perform liposuction are far too lax, leaving the door open for doctors in many specialties, such as dermatology, gynecology, or ER medicine, to offer liposuction to patients after very little training. We think trusting your body to someone requires more than that. Dr. Yamini and Dr. Svehlak have had years of aesthetic training followed by many years of hands on experience, which means they know the subtle nuances of this procedure that allow patients to achieve the most natural-looking results possible.
Despite the numerous options available, all liposuction and liposcultpure techniques operate on the same principle: Fat removed from the body is gone for good. Lipo-based methods physically pull unwanted fat cells from areas where they sit in large numbers.
This is counter to dieting and exercise, which can shrink the size of fat cells, but not change their number. A smaller fat cell can grow larger again. A fat cell no longer in the body cannot.
Some pockets of fat may resist even shrinking despite efforts to reduce them. These stubborn collections of cells may create an unwelcome bulge even as other areas on the body slim down. In such cases, removal or destruction represent a proven method for slimming down.
Liposuction can be used on any number of areas, including:
- thighs, inner knees, calves, and ankles
- buttocks and hips
- abdomen, waist, and back
- upper arms
- cheeks and submental area
Note that liposuction is an effective fat-reduction method but is not recommended for patients seeking weight-loss solutions. Patients who choose liposuction should be within 30 percent of their ideal body weight and in good health, helped by maintaining a balanced diet and regular physical activity.
About Liposuction at Sunset Cosmetic Surgery
Because every body is unique and requires a distinctive set of solutions, Sunset Cosmetic Surgery offers both standard volume liposuction under general anesthesia in an operating room and minimally invasive liposuction procedures tailored to meet your needs.
Depending on the full scope of the procedure, a patient may be given general anesthesia for comfort. Tumescent liposuction involves your doctor administering fluids—mostly diluted lidocaine and epinephrine—to the targeted area to both dull sensation and cause the tissue to become firm. This technique minimizes blood loss and bruising. Once the area is ready, your doctor will make an incision and insert a device known as a cannula, using a back-and-forth motion to loosen fat and then suction it out. The incision or incisions will then be closed with sutures.
Mini Sculpt Liposculpture
Mini Sculpt liposculpture takes a similar approach but is ideal for smaller refinements and done as an outpatient procedure under local anesthesia by one of our Los Angeles liposuction surgeons. It effectively targets small pockets of localized fat using micro-targeted liposuction for smooth results and less post-operative swelling and recovery time.
The procedure begins with the doctor carefully marking the targeted pockets of fat. The skin and fat in the area are numbed with a saline-based lidocaine solution, after which the solution and unwanted fat are safely removed using a cannula inserted via a very tiny incision—approximately the width of an eraser or less. Generally, the process is not painful, although some patients experience some mild discomfort.
SMART Lipo is laser-assisted liposuction that “melts” unwanted fat efficiently and effectively before it is removed by selectively targeting a fatty tissue. Further, it uses optimized wavelengths and a unique tip design to provide smooth, beautiful results with significantly less downtime versus other methods. SMART Lipo can have skin-tightening effects for patients with sagging skin. Patients who have had previous liposuction with resulting skin irregularities may be good candidates for SMART Lipo’s skin smoothing benefits due to the targeted “melting” of fat.
Treatment with SMART Lipo requires anesthesia, but may be done using local anesthesia only, depending on the area or areas to be treated and your needs. With local anesthesia, the patient remains awake during the procedure and often may return to work and resume other daily activities the same day. Larger or multiple areas sometimes require the use general anesthesia for optimal results.

VASERlipo® Liposelection and SMART Laser™ trade the manual back-and-forth motion required to dislodge fat with a cannula for fat-loosening energy delivered to the region via ultrasound or laser light. These gentler, minimally invasive methods cause less tissue trauma, require less recovery, and offer satisfying results.

Typical Liposuction Recovery Timelines
Initial recovery varies based on whether local or general anesthesia was used. General anesthesia is employed in cases where a lot of areas are being treated or there is a large volume of fat to remove. These cases also take longer to recover from.
Smaller cases involving smaller amounts of fat or areas treated are usually done in the office using a sedative and local anesthetic for numbing. Patients who undergo general anesthesia will usually experience more grogginess the day of and the day after their liposuction procedure. Day two, as the healing process begins, is often the most uncomfortable.
A compression garment is worn after liposuction procedures to help reduce swelling and post-operative discomfort. The garment is inconspicuous and comfortably worn under clothing. It is important to avoid excessive sodium consumption to limit swelling after surgery.
After liposuction, Los Angeles-area patients usually head back to work in three to seven days, depending on the case, and can resume moderate physical activity after several weeks to their comfort level. Recovery time is often quite minimal with SMART Lipo when used in smaller areas, with patients often able to return to basic minimal activity within 24 to 48 hours.
It’s important to talk to Dr. Yamini or Dr. Svehlak about your case and how long you’ll likely need for recovery before you are back in action.
What Does Liposuction Cost?
Liposuction cost is determined by the type and scope of the procedure chosen, which can vary depending on the amount of fat to be removed and the area of the body being targeted. The submental area below the chin, for instance, is much smaller than the abdomen.
Talk to your surgeon at your consultation about the ultimate look you would like to achieve. He will explain the best methods available to deliver that look and discuss liposuction cost and other details with you.
Procedures Beyond Liposuction
While liposuction is excellent for reducing fat cells in a targeted area, fat removal is only one element of body contouring. Skin and other tissues must conform to the newly slimmed-down contours to truly reveal the change. This can be a problem if skin is not healthy or pliant enough to contract. Loose skin remaining after fat reduction can create a flabby look, but can be reduced with surgery.
A tummy tuck is commonly paired with liposuction to provide total silhouette-changing contouring. This procedure tightens abdominal skin and removes the excess, as well as tightens muscles that have slackened due to being stretched out.
Patients specifically seeking fat removal for their submental area can consider KYBELLA®, an injectable approved by the FDA only for use on double chins. The minimally invasive treatment destroys fat cells with deoxycholic acid, permanently removing them from the body. Once the desired look is achieved, no further treatments are expected to be necessary.
While cellulite is not strictly a fat-based problem, the skin condition is closely related to excess fat cells that push the skin outward and create dimpling. Patients who choose liposuction for their thighs or buttocks and who also want to address cellulite can enjoy the results of Cellfina™, a minimally invasive treatment that severs the connective bands that pull skin down into unwanted divots.
Dr. Svehlak, Dr. Yamini, and the Sunset Cosmetic Surgery team will work with you to create a customized plan based on achieving the cosmetic results you want.
