A blepharoplasty, better known as eyelid surgery, is a procedure of choice to remove fat and excess skin from the upper and lower eyelids. This procedure can correct drooping upper lids and puffy bags below the eyes, which allows our patients choosing eyelid surgery to look more alert, more youthful, and less tired.

Since so much focus is put on the eyes, the double-board-certified Dr. Steve Svehlak and Dr. Dan Yamini take particular care in performing eyelid surgery that minimizes any visible scarring or marks. Blepharoplasty is a regular procedure at Sunset Cosmetic Surgery, where patients know they will be getting the full benefit of their surgeon’s experience and talent.

Dr. Steve Svehlak and Dr. Dan Yamini can perform just the upper lid, just the lower lid, or double eyelid surgery, depending on the patient’s needs.

Eyelid Surgery Explained

When receiving eyelid surgery, patients are treated in an operating room with general anesthesia or on an outpatient basis at our office using local anesthetic.

For an upper lid blepharoplasty, incisions located in the lid’s natural creases will allow for removal of excess skin, fat, and muscle as necessary to prevent drooping tissue that can create a permanently tired or frustrated expression, as well as obscure vision. A lower lid blepharoplasty also focuses on removing unwanted skin and fat, as well as tightening muscles, to eliminate sagging under the eye that gives the face a tired appearance. Sutures are applied with care to produce a natural, youthful look.

Typical Recovery Times

After eyelid surgery, Los Angeles patients are instructed to keep their head elevated for several days. A cool compress can help reduce swelling and bruising. Bruising varies from person to person, and it normally reaches its peak during the first week. While everyone is different, most patients feel comfortable stepping out in public after the first week of recovery, though minor residual puffiness or bruising may still be present. To give you a better idea of what to expect as you recover, you can view the healing process of a Los Angeles eyelid surgery patient whose upper lids were done. Stitches are usually removed two to seven days after surgery. Once they’re removed, the swelling and discoloration around the eyes will gradually subside. Most patients need to avoid contact lenses for about two weeks after the procedure.

Complementary Procedures

Blepharoplasty will not remove crow’s feet or eliminate dark circles under the eyes, nor will it lift sagging eyebrows. We recommend a brow lift for help with a sagging brow. The two surgeries are often done together to rejuvenate the entire upper half of the face.

BOTOX® can temporarily smooth away crow’s feet and frown lines on the forehead, making it a good choice for patients who want a more youthful look but who are not yet ready for surgery.
