The Sunset Difference: Rhinoplasty
Rhinoplasty is a complex art and science. It requires skilled surgical hands and an eye for aesthetics to ensure that whatever bothers patients about their nose is improved, while keeping the results natural-looking, balanced, and proportionate with the rest of the face. Both form and function are closely interrelated in nose jobs. If you wish to improve the appearance of your nose with rhinoplasty, Los Angeles-area surgeons Drs. Daniel Yamini and Steven Svehlak at Sunset Cosmetic Surgery are double board-certified and have a wealth of skill and experience to draw on and provide you with the right kind of corrections.

What Can Rhinoplasty Do for You?
Rhinoplasty, popularly known as a nose job, is a surgical procedure in which the nose is reshaped and/or resized to correct a range of functional and/or aesthetic concerns, such as:
- A visible hump or bump on the bridge of the nose
- Wide nostrils
- A drooping or enlarged tip
- A crooked or off-center nose
- Asymmetry or deformities from birth, or due to previous surgeries or injuries
- Issues with restrictive breathing
- Deviated septums
- Collapsed valves
- Enlarged turbinates
Note that the functional problems in the nose can frequently be covered by a patient’s health insurance.
Sunset’s rhinoplasty surgeons will work with you to make the necessary improvements to your nose. When you visit our practice for a rhinoplasty consultation, Dr. Svehlak and Dr. Yamini will analyze your nose in conjunction with the rest of your facial structure and make recommendations for enhancing your nose and face that would provide the most balanced, natural-looking, and aesthetically pleasing results.
In order to maintain the delicate balance in facial structure, in some cases, your surgeon may recommend complementary or alternative facial enhancement procedures to a rhinoplasty(such as chin implants), to further improve the overall look and contour of their face.
Open vs. Closed Rhinoplasty
There are two main types of rhinoplasty procedures: open and closed. The incisional approach taken by the surgeon determines what type of nasal surgery has been performed.
In an open rhinoplasty, the surgeon makes a small incision to the columella (the fleshy, outer end of the septum) in addition to the typical set of incisions required in a nasal correction. In a closed rhinoplasty, every incision is made inside the nose, and will not cut the columella.
There are many instances where a patient may only want small changes to their nose, such as tip refinement, a small bump, or some asymmetry issues. For these patients, their surgery can be performed under a local anesthesia in the office while awake with only a mild relaxation medicine, such as Xanax.
The type of procedure your surgeon performs depends on the existing features of your nose, as well as your desired goals for treatment.
Typical Recovery Time
After undergoing rhinoplasty at Sunset Cosmetic Surgery, our patients have found that recovery time can vary greatly. Much depends on the region of the nose affected by the procedure. For instance, recovering from swelling, bruising, and discomfort after work on the tip of the nose will require less time than nostril or bridge work.
Most patients use pain medication anywhere from two to 10 days after surgery, and experience some swelling and bruising for up to six weeks. Numbness can also occur for a week or so after surgery, usually at the tip of nose. The use of sunscreen is also important after your procedure, since ultraviolet radiation in sunlight can impede proper healing and make scars more apparent.
Most patients return to work one to three weeks after surgery, and can slowly resume exercise (including swimming) four to six weeks after the procedure. While these are very large ranges, your rhinoplasty surgeon will provide more detailed instructions for your individual recovery. Complete results are seen anywhere from three to 12 months following surgery.
